The Ultimate Sorority Rush Bag: What to Pack for Recruitment

Sorority recruitment, also known as rush, is an exhilarating and unforgettable experience for many college students. It's a time to meet new friends, explore different sororities, and ultimately find your home away from home. As you prepare for this exciting journey, one essential item you'll need is a well-packed sorority rush bag. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a first-time rushee, here's a guide to help you pack everything you'll need to navigate the recruitment process with ease and style.

The Ultimate Sorority Rush Bag: What to Pack for Recruitment

1. Comfortable Shoes

First things first, you'll be doing a lot of walking during sorority recruitment, so be sure to pack a pair of comfortable shoes that you can change into/out of. During the early days of recruitment, opt for flats or low-heeled shoes that you can walk in for extended periods without discomfort, but be sure to have some flip-flops to throw on in-between houses. You'll thank yourself later when you're trekking across campus from one sorority house to the next.

2. Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is crucial, especially during long days of recruitment events (especially when it’s scorching hot during those summer months). Bring a reusable water bottle to keep yourself hydrated and energized throughout the day. Consider choosing a stylish water bottle that you can clip onto your bag for easy access.

3. Snacks

With busy schedules and back-to-back events, you'll want to have some snacks on hand to keep your energy levels up. Pack healthy snacks like granola bars, fruit, nuts, or trail mix to munch on between events. Portable snacks that won't make a mess are ideal for on-the-go nibbling. Two quick tips: 1. be sure to check your teeth before hopping back into rush. You don’t want to have food stuck between your teeth when you visit your favorite houses. 2. Try to avoid protein bars, as they can definitely bloat you!

4. Touch-Up Essentials

A few touch-up essentials can go a long way in helping you look and feel your best throughout the day. Pack travel-sized versions of your favorite makeup, lip balm, oil-absorbing sheets, and a small mirror for quick touch-ups between events. Don't forget to toss in some hair ties or bobby pins for any hair emergencies. Remember to check the weather and adjust your hairstyle/make-up to accomodate!

5. Note-Taking Supplies

During recruitment, you'll want to take notes to help you remember key details about each sorority and its members. Bring a small notebook or planner and a pen to jot down your impressions, questions, and any important information you want to remember for later. It’s hard to remember every house you visit, so taking notes is an easy way to keep track of each house. I typically recommend a five-star system, adding five stars next to the house name that you like the most. If you didn’t connect with any of the girls and cannot see yourself in that house, give one star. This will help you decide how to rank houses at the end of each day.

6. Portable Phone Charger

While you won’t be on your phone all day long, as you’ll be pretty busy, bring a portable phone charger or power bank to ensure your phone stays charged and ready. It’s also important to be aware of your university’s recruitment rules regarding social media. My recommendation is that you don’t post on Instagram or Tik-Tok at all during recruitment; it’s not worth the risk!

7. Emergency Kit

Emergency Kit

Prepare for any unexpected mishaps by packing a small emergency kit with essentials like band-aids, Tylenol or Advil, tissues, and hand sanitizer. You never know when you might need these items, so it's better to be safe than sorry.

Additionally, if you have medication that you have to take during the day, be sure to include that.

8. Portable Fan

Trust me: it’s going to get hot outside. Pack a battery-operated fan that can keep you cool during those ultra-hot summer months.

9. Positive Attitude

Last, but certainly not least, pack your positive attitude and open mind. Sorority recruitment can be a whirlwind of emotions, but approaching it with a positive attitude and an open mind will make the experience more enjoyable and fulfilling. Remember to be yourself, stay true to your values, and embrace the journey ahead.
